Marisa Tomei was born December 4, 1964 in (Brooklyn) New York,
hometown of another popular and versatile actress,
Anne Hathaway. Marisa is the daughter of a trial lawyer
and an English teacher. A student of acting
and dance, she received extra lessons from her mother to eliminate
her acute Brooklyn accent, an accent she used to generous effect in her
most famous role as the automobile savvy girlfriend to Joe Pesci in "My
Cousin Vinny." Marisa spent her summer holidays in upstate New York
performing in plays at the Golden Bridge Colony. She dropped out of
Boston University, much to the displeasure of her family, when her big
break came to perform in a daytime soap, "As The World Turns." Marisa
remained on the set for two years, sharing her habitat with Meg Ryan and
later working alongside Courtney Cox. Marisa had her first taste of a
film with a minor role in "The Flamingo Kid," where she got to speak a
single line.
At age 22, Marisa returned to the theatre debuting in an off-Broadway
play and promptly won a Theatre World award. This was followed by
another award in another play. After more plays and soaps before the
comedy "Oscar," alongside Sylvester Stallone and Kirk Douglas when she
caught the critics attention. This was followed soon after by "My
Cousin Vinny," a role that would win her a best actress Oscar. She
followed this with the role of Mabel Normand in "Chaplin," a leading
role in "Untamed Heart," and "The Paper" with Michael Keaton and Glenn
Close. Marisa prefers to play cameo roles and sidekicks rather than the
leading lady, as a result of which she tends to be in the background
such as in 2003's "Anger Management" (including Jack Nicholson, Adam
Sandler, and beauty pageant winner, Krista Allen.)
She is also known as the girl George Castanza (played by Jason
Alexander) seriously wanted to date while he was still engaged to be
married, on a hilarious series of episodes on the Jerry Seinfeld sitcom.
