Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born April 28, 1974 in Madrid Spain (homeland
of newcomer Paz Vega and
birthplace of veteran movie actress and model, Maribel Verdu.)
Penelope is the daughter of a retailer father and hairdresser
mother. She first studied
classical dance at Spain's National Conservatory for nine years,
including ballet and jazz dance. For a brief time she became a fashion
model, appeared in music videos, then was a presenter for children's
programs on television. When she decided to concentrate on movie
acting, she appeared in a succession of successful films, including "The
Greek Labyrinth," and "Belle Epoque," the latter a hit film in Spain
which captured many awards locally, and also achieved an Oscar for Best
Foreign Language Film.
Many more European hit roles followed until she became famous in North
America as the heroine in "Woman on Top," (1999). Her best known
American films include "All the Pretty Horses," (2000), "Blow" (2001),
and $100 million hit "Vanilla Sky" alongside Tom Cruise, who was her
boyfriend at the time. The relationship made her notorious in the
tabloids. Alternating between European and American productions,
Penelope's next major role was in the horror film, "Gothika," alongside
Halle Berry. Penelope's schedule continues to be busy with roles on
both sides of the Atlantic.
