Salma Hayek Jimenez was born September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos,
Veracruz, Mexico, (the same province as Ana de la Reguera,
telenovela actress and Penelope Cruz, lookalike). The daughter of a
Lebanese father and Spanish mother, she was sent to a boarding school in
Louisiana when she was only twelve. She lived for a while with an aunt
in Houston before heading back to Mexico. Embarking on an acting career
she found work on stage and in a popular daytime TV serial, which led to
the title role in another Mexican serial that led to nationwide
popularity for the young Mexican. This was enough to inspire the
black-haired, brown-eyed woman to emigrate to Los Angeles in 1991, where
she took lessons in English and acting. Fellow countrywoman, Thalia, was to follow much
the same pattern a few years later.
Four years later, Salma Hayek (often misspelled Salma Hayak) landed a
role along with Antonio Banderas in the 1995 movie, "Desperado." This
was followed by a few insignificant roles before landing the lead role
in a romantic comedy, "Fools Rush In," opposite Matthew Perry. She
later played Esmeralda in TNT's adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre
Dame." Steady work followed until she landed the ultimate role as
painter Frida Kahlo, in the film, "Frida." She later became a new
spokesperson for Avon Cosmetics and has consistently been voted one of
the best dressed actresses.
She has lately appeared in and helped to develop the superb new television
series, "Ugly Betty," starring America Ferrera.
