Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 2, 1977 in
Barranquilla, Colombia, South America, the daughter of a Lebanese father
and Colombian mother. Her Arabic name means "woman full of grace."
Known internationally as Shakira, the young artist wrote her first song
when she was only eight years old. At age ten, she was winning local and
national talent contests. She moved to Bogota to become a model, but
instead signed a recording contract with Sony Music in Colombia. In
1991, she released her first album, "Magia," (Magic) when she was only
fourteen. Although she appeared briefly on a Colombia soap opera three
years later, it was only after finishing school, that she decided to
dedicate her self to her music.
In subsequent years the sales of her efforts ascended in Latin America,
Brazil and Spain, her album "Pies Descalzos," selling close to four
million copies. She toured for two years to sold-out audiences around
the world. Her awards have included Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
at the first annual Latin Grammy Awards in the fall of 2000. According
to Shakira, she grew up with western music including Led Zeppelin and
the Beatles, but being of Lebanese descent, she is devoted to Arabic
tastes and sounds: "Somehow I'm a fusion of all those passions and my
music is a fusion of elements that I can make coexist in the same place,
in one song." Unlike her teen queen contemporaries, Shakira is a
hard-working, poetic songwriter with imagination and superb music skills
at her command. Her new album, "Laundry Service," draws extensively from
her personal experiences. Shakira was chosen among dozens of female
Latin singers to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, and more recently
the Colombian government designated the young singer an official
goodwill ambassador. At the World Music Awards in Monaco, she was named
Latin Female Artist of the Year.
