Tyra Banks was born December 4th, 1973 in Los Angeles. When Tyra
matured from a skinny kid into an attractive teen, she began to work out
and decided she wanted to be a model. Turned down by four modeling
agencies because they thought her face wasn't photogenic, she finally
signed with the Elite agency at the age of 17. She moved to Paris for a
year where she modeled for many of the big names in fashion, including
Chanel and Ralph Lauren. Although she landed a small role in a British
television movie and appeared in a recurring supporting role in an
American sitcom, the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," Tyra's true call was
still in modeling. When she was 20, she became the first black woman to
sign for a cosmetic company and was the first African-American model to
appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. She also
became the first black woman to be featured on the covers of GQ and
Victoria's Secret catalog.
The girl who was turned down for not have a photogenic face, made the
People Magazine's Most Beautiful list twice. Tyra has had a number of
parts in a variety of movies, taking the roles on quite seriously, and
she is even rumored to be a potential replacement for Oprah Winfrey.
Unlike other models and supermodels who often lose perspective on their
significance and quite often decline as rapidly as they rise, Tyra is a
dedicated hero and role model. She loves children and animals and is a
proponent of acquiring a good education. She has chosen her promotions
carefully, including greeting cards for kids and families and an
organization dedicated to helping abused and neglected children. Tyra's
"Kidsuccess Kids" was created by children from 8 to 9 years of age, the
project designed to help enhance literacy for children in troubled
environments. Tyra has also traveled extensively to bring worldwide
attention to the endangered rainforests, in such countries as
Costa Rica, homeland of model
Maribel Guardia
and television star
Vica Andrade.
